She was always home, sickly ever since he was born. She was always with him, never letting the maids take him away. She took the reins on his studies, teaching him what she could before a tutor had to step in.[break][break]

His father stopped smiling on the night his mother passed away. He had always been stern, but grief caused him to retreat into himself and lash out on those around him. His misdirected anguish turned to Dmitriy. He looked too much like his mother, even in his youth. Their staff pretended they did not hear or see a thing, bodies tense and gazes averted.[break][break]

Then Evgenia came into their lives, brought into their household after a drunken night. They were married the next month, and Dmitriy gained a little sister later that year.[break][break]

He tried his hardest to accept his new step-mother. She tried her hardest to fill the void left by Matrona, though she knew she never could. What she could do, however, was protect Dmitriy from her husband, who still saw the ghost of his late wife every time he looked at his son. It was enough, and, for that, he was grateful.[break][break]

When it seemed like his father was beginning to regress, Evgenia enrolled Dmitriy in an international academy. She promised that his father would be a "changed man" by the time he graduated and that she would write often.[break][break]

Dmitriy quickly decided he hated his time at Outback Academy, but that did not stop him from excelling, constantly striving to be the top of his class each year. He could not sully his family's name, after all.
